Choose two songs before you arrive
Choose songs that everyone can prepare. Share the same reference recording and confirm the key, structure and ending. If you make changes, write them in a short message so people do not practise different versions.
Confirm who is bringing each instrument and what the room provides. A drum kit may not include cymbals, and an available amplifier may need a cable nobody has brought. Asking in advance saves rehearsal time.
One possible plan for an hour
Adapt the timing to your group and rehearsal room. Allow for setting up and packing away instead of treating the whole booking as playing time.
- 10 minutes: set up, tune and balance the volume so everyone can hear.
- 35 minutes: play both songs and repeat the parts that need attention.
- 10 minutes: discuss what worked and choose one thing to improve.
- 5 minutes: confirm the next step and get the room ready to leave.
Work on one difficulty at a time
If an entrance or transition is not working, identify the spot and repeat a short section. Playing the entire song repeatedly without agreeing on what to change can use up energy without clarifying the problem.
Let each person explain what they hear. If you want to record a rehearsal reference, agree with everyone first and decide where it will be kept and who can listen.
